The James Pond Kickstarter campaign has been cancelled by Gameware.
After it raised less than a fifth of its $100,000 goal, organisers decided to pull the plug on the campaign with 12 days still to go.
Gameware believes that potential backers were put off by a lack of footage and has pledged to come back with a stronger campaign in the future.
"The campaign wasn't the success we'd hoped for," reads a statement on Kickstarter.
"This was for a few reasons, all of which we plan on addressing and then making a come back with a new, stronger campaign!
"We came into this with little game to show. We appreciate we were asking for a lot of faith from you guys, and our mantra from the start has always been to keep the game design as open as possible, with the fans calling the shots.
"This was a risk, and it didn't work out, but I will say a huge thank you to everyone who pledged."
The team promised to update fans about the future of James Pond and has asked for feedback about what should be included in the next campaign.
James Pond first appeared on the Amiga and Sega Mega Drive in 1990 and was followed by a number of sequels and spinoffs, including James Pond 2: Robocod and Aquatic Games.
Independent publisher Systems 3 recently announced that it is developing James Pond: Codename Robocod, the 1991 sequel to the original.
